Maple Syrup Season on Hold

Posted: Updated:
WESTFORD, Vt. -

Spring is supposed to be prime harvesting time for maple syrup producers.

But that's not the case right now.

After a little bit of an off-season last year, maple syrup producers are still hoping for a better one this year, even if nothing is happening right now.

At McBride Family Maples in Westford, owner Christopher McBride has tapped more than 2,000 trees.

He say so far this season they've had some good sap runs. But now everything has come to a halt.

That's because with temperatures dropping into the teens the sap is not flowing or running.

"Just being in that line, having that physical obstruction the sap has no where to go. When you have an obstruction in a one-inch line with an ice block in there it takes more than a 34 degree day to sort of break that down and let sap flow through it," says McBride.

McBride says it's hard to predict the rest of the season. But he says things are looking good as long as temperatures warm slowly to get the sap flowing.
