Taxi Company Explains Closure

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The owner of a taxi cab company in Montpelier and Barre is explaining its sudden shut down.

Twin City Taxi owner David Pecor says last week the state told the company to close because it did not have workers comp insurance. Pecor says he did not think he needed it because the company simply leases cars to people and they are not considered workers.

He says can not afford to carry the insurance.

"It just seems that our hands are tied. If we do it the way they want us to do it we would be out of business anyway because it's not how this industry works," says Pecor.

The Vermont Department of Labor had previously said that companies need to have the insurance.

But on Wednesday it did not respond to messages to see if Pecor's situation was different as he claims.
