Electric Car Owners Could Be Hit With Fee To Make Up for Gas Tax

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

As the gas tax increase continues to make its way through the Vermont statehouse, some lawmakers don't think it's right that electric car owners avoid paying into it.

That's why they've proposed an annual fee.

The gas tax amendment would make electric car owners pay an additional $146 fee each year.

Some lawmakers say they use the roads, and should be forced to pay a tax that goes to help improve them.

It's an idea that they don't believe will deter people from buying these vehicles.

"I do not because they still have the benefit of not polluting like the regular gas or diesel vehicle. So there is a huge benefit still," said Vermont State Rep. Robert Bouchard.

House leaders don't believe this fee will pass this year.

But they say as more people turn to electric vehicles, it's something they'll consider in the future.
