NY Lawmakers Battle Over Minimum Wage Increases, Trying to Pass Budget

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, N.Y. -

One of the arguments between New York Republicans and Democrats is the minimum wage.

Senate Democrats hoped for an immediate hike to $9.00/hour, but it looks like they may have to settle for a gradual increase over the next 3 years with no link to inflation.

"Unfortunately, due to the arrangement that exists in the Senate, the Republicans have outsized influence on these issues and it looks like that's where this issue ends up, we'll be getting half a loaf," Sen. Mike Gianaris (D-Queens) said.

Also still on the table, tax increases for the wealthy and school funding.

Lawmakers have until March 31 to pass a budget, but they've set an early deadline for themselves, this Thursday.

Both sides are confident they'll come to terms by then.
