VT Education Officials Holding Press Conference to Talk About High Costs of Higher Education in VT

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Education officials from the Vermont State Colleges and University of Vermont are holding a press conference Friday with students and state legislators to discuss the effects of high costs of higher education in Vermont.

A press release says less than 20% of funding for the Vermont State Colleges and University of Vermont comes from the state, with the remainder coming primarily from student tuition. That's down from 50% of funding back in 1980.

"The burden of student debt is inhibiting students from attending school in Vermont," Shane Bouthillette, Student Government President at Johnson State College, said. "This burden is also felt after graduation, by making it difficult for students to maintain a livable wage in our State. At a time of budget cuts and tightening of belts, the last thing we should do is stop investing in our future."

A bill, S.40, is currently in the Vermont Senate which, if passed, would help make Vermont Higher Education more affordable.
