US Sen. Gillibrand Leading the Fight Against Sexual Violence in the Military

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, of N.Y., is heading to her first hearing Wednesday in Washington. She's leading the fight to end sexual violence in the military.

According to a press release, it's the first of its type in the Senate in nearly a decade. The hearing will include testimony from victims of sexual assault and military officials.

In 2011, more than 3,000 military sexual assaults were reported, but the Department of Defense puts the actual number closer to 19,000.

With service branches enforcing different policies for processing and punishing a convicted sexual offender, an annual report showed around 36% of them remained in the armed forces in Fiscal Year 2011.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
