CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -
New York State Police say one person is dead after a crash involving a car, van, and a bus filled with students from St. Michael's College.
It happened around noon in the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 in Clifton Park, which is near Albany.
Police say the person killed was a 64-year-old passenger in a Porsche that lost control, spun out, and caused the crash. They say the 65-year-old driver of the Porsche is in critical but stable condition.
According to Saint Michael's College, the bus was carrying 34 players from the lacrosse team and was en route to a scheduled game with Mercy College. There were also 2 coaches and an athletic trainer on board.
Police say four students had minor injuries and none of them were taken to the hospital.
"Luckily our bus driver did a phenomenal job of keeping us safe and taking care of the team," says Patrick Ivory, lacrosse team head coach. "All of the players had the ability to talk to their parents on the phone just to let them know they were safe"
Students were transported by school buses to a local fire house. Saint Michael's College says the team is spending the night in the Albany area. They had been traveling to Mercy College for a Wednesday game. That game has tentatively been rescheduled for Thursday, depending on how the team is doing.
The bus operator, Premier Coach out of Milton, Vermont, says it runs buses for St. Mike's athletic programs and says at this point its focus is making sure everyone is okay.
