Lebanon, NH Police Warning of Ongoing Bail Scam

Posted: Updated:
LEBANON, N.H. -

Lebanon Police are warning of an ongoing bail scam.

Police say the scam usually involves a late-night phone call that targets an older person. The caller will usually identify themselves in one of three ways - a representative of the intended victim, an official from a court or law enforcement agency, or the use of a common name such as John or Dave.

The caller will claim that they are under arrest or say that a relative has been arrested. Police say the caller will then ask the intended victim for money to either be wired to them or  request a debit or credit card number. The caller will say their intent is to use the money for bail.

The amount of money typically requested ranges from $500 to several thousand dollars. Police say the caller than asks the victim not to tell other family members.

If successful, the caller sometimes calls back asking for more money to get their passport back to return home.

Lebanon Police offer these tips to avoid being scammed:
• Resist the temptation to act immediately
• Know with whom you are speaking
• Check with other family members before sending any money
