SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. -
Outside of town hall in Saranac Lake a new group called Sons and Daughters of Liberty staged a rally against the New York Safe Act.
"We wanted to put the smaller populated counties on the map," group founder Ken Kunath said.
Kunath says a grass roots effort like his is the way to show lawmakers they want the act repealed.
There's always a small amount of people who want to jump up and say no or say this is what we have to do. These people are the ones who want to say no today," Kunath said.
Some of what they're taking issue with is required universal background checks, a tougher ban on assault weapons and new regulations on high capacity ammunition clips.
Some of the gun rights advocates here say they wish there was a bigger crowd but there are several polls going around trying to get the opinion of New York as a whole on this Act.
A poll done by Marist College says 41 percent of New Yorkers think the act was "about right" while 30 percent say "it went too far."
The Sons and Daughters of Liberty though say their issue isn't just with gun regulation but with their constitutional rights.
"We're here today to defend our constitutional right to bear arms without infringement and that's what we're about," Kunath said.
