Vt. Paper Defends Controversial Poster

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -

The Caledonian-Record published an editorial in response to the criticism about a poster it distributed.

On Thursday, the paper distributed a poster supporting a St. Johnsbury basketball team the "Toppers."

Some thought it was racist. The poster said "Go Toppers Fry Rice" with fry rice written in the style of typical Chinese calligraphy.

In the editorial, the Caledonian-Record did not apologize for doing it.

The paper wrote, "We acknowledge that our wordplay punctuated by the font we chose evoked a particular ethnic cuisine. We do not concede however that the use of imagery with any racial, ethnic or religious inference is to inherently debase that race/ethnicity/religion."

The Asian American Journalists Association says the insert appalled them and the type face used made it offensive. It had hoped the paper would admit the poster was a lapse in judgement.
