New US Census Numbers Show Millions Travel An Hour To Get To Work

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

For millions of people across the US, in order to get a paycheck we have to drive.

But for some people, including Russ McDonald, getting to work takes a long time.

Living in Peacham, Vermont and working in Montpelier, McDonald's commute can be as long as an hour.

"My wife is a speech pathologist in Barnet and this was something of a in between place," said McDonald.

McDonald doesn't mind the drive in, but he says the ride back isn't as fun.

"In the evening certainly you're pining to get home a little bit earlier," said McDonald.

McDonald isn't the only person to commute at least an hour.

New US Census numbers shows millions make that long drive.

In New York it's 16%, New Hampshire about 10% and in Vermont it's at 5%.

Not everyone has that long of a commute, in fact the Census shows that the average drive time for Americans is about 25 minutes.

For those with the long commute, paying for gas can add up.

That might be why the U-S census shows a third of people with that commute use either a bus or carpool.

An option that McDonald says he couldn't live without.

"I can save anywhere from $200-400 dollars a month just by utilizing other modes of transportation," said McDonald.
