FAA Releases Lists of Possible Control Tower Closures

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The Federal Aviation Administration released a list of control towers that might close due to the automatic spending cuts.

In a letter sent out last month, the FAA said in order to prepare they needed to cut $600 million for the remainder of the budget year. They would include furloughs, closing over 100 air traffic control facilities and eliminating overnight shifts at over 60 facilities. And as a result of these cuts, the FAA said air travelers can expect delays.

Vermont is not on the lists of affected facilities; however New York and New Hampshire are.

Air traffic control facilities that could close:

  • New York: Binghamton Tower in Johnson City, Francis S. Gabreski in Westhampton Beach, Niagara Falls International, Ithaca Tomkins Regional, Dutchess County in Wappingers Falls and Griffiss International in Rome
  • New Hampshire: The Boire Field tower in Nashua

Towers in New York & New Hampshire that could lose overnight shifts:

  • New York towers include: Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.
  • New Hampshire towers include: Manchester

The lists of all affected facilities can be viewed here:
