President Obama Signed Violence Against Women Act Thursday

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

President Barack Obama signed legislation to strengthen and reauthorize Violence Against Women Act Thursday afternoon.

Obama will sign the law at around 2 p.m. Thursday.

The law passed the house last Thursday where it had met resistance from Republicans.

The act helps fund programs across our area, including at Hope Works in Burlington, Vt.

Staff say they are thrilled it passed because it helps fund about 40% of their budget.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) was lead author of the bill.

The bill expired in 2011.
