Officials: Bacteria Resistant Super Bug Hasn't Hit Vermont Yet

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Super bugs are on the rise among patients at hospitals and nursing homes. They're untreatable and hard to detect.

FOX44 and ABC22 checked in with Fletcher Allen Health Care and the state of Vermont to see if it's an issue locally.

They say the nightmare bacteria hasn't arrived yet.

The CDC warns the germs have become resistant to nearly all antibiotics we have today.

According to a disease specialist, when things show up in other parts of the world, they generally end up in ours as well.

Prevention is critical.

"We're expecting this will arrive at some point," Kemper Alston, Infectious Disease Specialist at Fletcher Allen, said. "We're working very closely with our microbiology laboratory to tip us off and if they see any one of these bacteria that might fall into this group, we can do further testing and see if this really exists."

In the past, Fletcher Allen has tested some drug resistant bacteria, but they came back negative.
