NORTH HUDSON, N.Y. -

New York State Police shot and killed a man after leading them on a high speed chase Tuesday night.

Police say when they tried to stop 28-year-old Richard Aubin, of Ausable Forks, N.Y., for speeding on I-87, he took off. Aubin turned off I-87 onto Route 9 in the town of North Hudson, N.Y.

Police say they put spike strips down in an attempt to stop Aubin's black 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. When his truck stopped working, he fled into the woods and a foot pursuit began. When Aubin was finally located by the two officers pursing him, a violent struggle began. Police attempted to use pepper spray, but it didn't work.

Aubin was shot after, police say, he tried to grab for a trooper's gun.

An autopsy is scheduled at Albany Medical Center later Wednesday.

Police said during Wednesday's press conference that Aubin had a lengthy criminal record.

FOX44 and ABC22 reporter Jenny Day will have more on this story tonight on ABC22 6,7 and FOX44 at 10 p.m.
