MILTON, Vt. -
For many voting begins at seven Tuesday morning. In Milton, people got a jump start on proposals they'll have to vote on.
Take a look at the Milton high school cafeteria and locker rooms. Up close, you can see years of wear and tear. Not to mention, the locker rooms are upstairs and not suitable for students in wheelchairs.
"I'm hoping that the voters will support it," said Superintendent John Barone is optimistic tax payers will vote yes Tuesday to the over 9 million dollar renovation project at the high school.
"You've got to make me feel better about it," said John Schneck, a resident of Milton, who doesn't quite buy the proposal, "Nine million dollars to fix a cafeteria and some locker rooms? How much does it cost to build a new school?"
That's not the only thing on the ballot.
"We are asking for a 6.5 % increase and that's a significant increase," said Barone.
He explains why they're asking for that much, "We are seeing a double digit increase in insurance, 14 percent increase in healthcare premiums, and we're also seeing a decline in federal dollars."
And that's just the school budget. For the town, the budget is up 5% over last year. But it's Article 5 that really had people up in arms.
A reserve fund targeted for the recreation department, which will cost 1/2 a penny on the tax rate or 10 dollars a year for homes valued over $200,000.
Problem is, some like Schneck, say it's open-ended, "Give me 10 dollars a year. For how long? Well no, just give me 10 dollars a year, does that make sense?"
