Technology Aims To Improve Amber Alert System

Posted: Updated:
WILLISTON, Vt. -

If a child goes missing, an amber alert is issued. Its saved 520 children since its start in 1998. But now, technology has revamped the nationwide system.

Cell phone alerts have been added.

Unless you opt out, your smart phone will automatically send the name of the kidnapped child, the possible suspect and a description of the vehicle.

The goal is to have more kids returned home safely!

"This gives many more eyes and ears to the situation, makes you aware of the fact that even if you're not traveling, you may be home, may not have the TV or the radio on, but your phone will go off," Vermont State Police Lieutenant Mark Lauer said.

The new system will also send Presidential messages and weather advisories straight to your smart phone.
