Changes Being Made to How AMBER Alerts Are Being Sent to Your Cell Phone

Posted: Updated:
WATERBURY, Vt. -

Changes are coming to how AMBER alerts are sent to your cell phone.

A press release says as of January 1, 2013, AMBER alerts are automatically sent through the wireless emergency alerts (WEA) program. This means if you have a WEA-enabled phone, you will automatically receive 3 alerts, presidential address, weather and AMBER alerts.

Law enforcement officials are encouraging users to check their mobile devices for compatibility as these changes will not only affect Vermont AMBER Alerts, but affect the alerts you receive while traveling outside of Vermont.

AMBER Alerts in Vermont will still be displayed on the radio and television, AOT signs, State of Vermont websites, and on social media sites.

Any questions or concerns on the AMBER Alert message received on your phone should be directed to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).
