Thousands of Gun Rights Supporters Rallied in Albany, NY Thursday

ALBANY, N.Y. -

Thousands of gun rights supporters rallied in Albany, N.Y. to protest the state's new gun control law.

It's the third time protesters have gathered at the New York State House since Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) signed the New York Safe Act into effect last month.

The laws bans assault weapons and limits the number of bullets in a magazine.

The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association planned the rally for its annual Lobby Day Thursday. Several legislators who voted against the law and gun owners and advocates spoke at the rally.

NRA President David Keene headlined the event and said, "You deal with gun crime by prosecuting it and all too often politicians don't do that. [Governor Cuomo] was sacrificing the rights of the people of New York on the alter of his own ambition. Cuomo is a fellow that thinks he aught to be president."

Governor Cuomo says the law is needed to prevent tragedies like the massive shooting in Newtown, Conn.

More than 5,000 people from around the state attended the rally on Thursday.
