Fighting Online Hackers

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Online security experts say the good news is that it's not necessarily that there are more hacker attacks, we're just hearing more about them.

And it's the ones against bank websites in the past few months that have people concerned.

In Burlington Monday, Champlain College instructor Duane Dunston taught students how to design a computer network to protect against hackers and how to spot an attack.

He says big companies should be thinking about this too.

"We assume banks have the properly trained personnel to help keep the information secure. And really for the most part they do but a lot of times they don't," says Dunston.

The problem is you can't tell how safe a company's network is. So it's a matter of trust once you give your personal information to them.

Dunston says that means keeping a close eye on your accounts to spot any problems early.

He say there should be new federal legislation that would allow outside auditors to check on a company's network.  That way everyone would know if security is tight.

Now if you think your information has been hacked or stolen, here's what the experts say you should do:

- First file a police report.  You might need that later.

- Second, contact one of the three credit agencies.  It will let the other two know what happened.

- And finally, you may want to consider hiring a lawyer to help untangle the potential mess.
