BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A first for UVM and Vermont, the For Inspiration Recognition of Science and Technology or FIRST made an appearance at the Davis Center Saturday.

The event pitted teams of 7th and 12th graders against each other to build and control robots while making them do various tasks.

Teams as far as Michigan came to UVM to complete against each other. Five teams from Vermont took part and the top teams will head to a national competition in St. Louis.

More than 250,000 students compete in "First" events every year.

"As a university we are so excited about the students that we are getting from this platform," Doug Dickey, UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, said. "They have so much more imagination and what they are learning in the class room, they cant wait to apply it, and they're think about how they are going to use this."

The University of Vermont hopes to host many more of these events in the future. Other colleges in Vermont have also expressed interest in hosting these events as well.
