Vt. & Upstate NY Drug Ring Busted

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Federal agents say they busted a multi-state drug ring that funneled cocaine to our region.

Right now six men are facing charges and police say their investigation continues.

Prosecutors say six men were running cocaine from New York City to Upstate New York and Vermont for at least a year.  Police say they supplied large amounts of the drug to street sellers.

While it's unclear where in Upstate New York and Vermont the drugs were being sold, at least in Burlington police say they've seen an increased problem with some drugs, including crack cocaine.

That drug network is something officers at the Burlington Police Department keep a close eye on, including Sergeant Jason Lawson.

"That is something we are continuously monitoring," says Lawson.

Lawson says they want to catch everyone from the drug users to the big-time drug dealers.  He says it's important to find the source of the drugs, usually in big cities.

"Just to focus primarily on Burlington issues would obviously, you would miss some of the bigger picture," says Lawson.

Prosecutors say several of the men have already been arraigned on the federal charges.  They say one man who was arrested in Vermont will be brought to Brooklyn to be arraigned there.

All six could face up to life in prison if convicted.
