COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Colchester police say it was a bizarre series of events that led them to a drug bust at St. Michael's College.

Police say 19-year-old Colin Basler was until recently a St. Michael's student and was charged for having and selling LSD.

"Certainly he's a college student first and any quantity of drugs that you bring in and offer to sale to other students and friends makes you a significant target," says Sgt. Charles Cole, Colchester Police Department.

Cole says Basler only became a police target after a strange series of events.

Police say their drug investigation started Friday at a Colchester convenience store.  That's where police say another St. Michael's student, Ethan Levine, trashed the store and then ran to a bridge in Colchester.

Police say Levine jumped off the bridge and landed some 40-feet below. He was seriously hurt.

And police say they quickly realized drugs were involved.

"What happened on Friday really prompted a much larger investigation into drug activity on the campus of St. Mike's?" asked FOX 44/ABC 22.

"Yeah," says Cole.

Cole says that's what led them to Basler, a drug dealer.

"Drugs are not acceptable on campus," says Buff Lindau, St. Michael's College director of communications.

Lindau says action is taken if drugs are found on campus.  Though it's not common.

"I don't think there is a drug issue at St. Mike's but I think it's pretty realistic to understand there are drugs on college campuses sometimes," says Lindau.

Police say Basler is expected in court next week.  They say the investigation continues and more arrests are expected.

As for the student who jumped, the hospital says Levine is in fair condition now.
