Critics: Shumlin Aides Buried Health Tax Plan

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A group critical of Gov. Peter Shumlin's push for a single-payer, universal health care system is saying the governor's administration halted the work of consultants who were nearly ready to release recommendation on how the system would be paid for.

Vermonters for Health Care Freedom is basing its criticisms on 1,600 pages of documents it says it got in response to a public records request.

The group says consultants from the University of Massachusetts were halted and that $40,000 worth of their work was shelved this past fall.

The administration has been under fire from Republicans for not saying what taxes will be raised to pay for the system.

Administration officials say such a decision would be premature, since the program isn't to begin operations until 2017.
