ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -

A Vermont woman is being accused of animal cruelty.

Police say they investigated a complaint stating that 65-year-old Louise Townsend's rabbits were not being properly cared for. When officers arrived at Townsend's home, they found 28 live rabbits in cages and 13 dead rabbits.

Police say Townsend agreed to turn the rabbits over to police have them checked by a qualified veterinarian.

Results from the vet showed the rabbits were suffering from lack of water and nutrition.

The rabbits are now being cared for by Riverside Rescue.

Townsend is due in court on Monday to answer to cruelty to animals charges at the Caledonia County Court.
