CDC: Death Rate of Overdosing on Prescription Drugs Up for 11th Straight Year

ATLANTA -

A disturbing new report on the abuse of prescription drugs.

It seems the death rate of overdosing has gone up over the past few years.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says death rates are up for the 11th straight year.

The report says many of them were accidental involving addictive painkillers.

Opiates which include oxycontin and vicodin cause 3 out of 4 of the deadly overdoses.

Anti-anxiety medication was also behind many of the deaths.

The CDC says 17% of the deaths were reported suicides.
