It's one step forward for the so called sugar tax in Vermont.
As a Vermont House Committee votes to advance the legislation.
It calls for a penny-an-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened drinks, which is expected to raise $27 million to support state health programs.
Supporters say it could discourage consumption of products that contribute to obesity.
However, opponents say the tax will send more shoppers out of state.
