Investigation Prompts Vt. Attorney General Action

Posted: Updated:
COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Vermont's Attorney General says his office is taking action after a FOX 44/ABC 22 investigation.

We found some online ads for florists to be confusing and now Attorney General Bill Sorrell says they might actually be illegal.

"We think there is a real potential for deception there," says Sorrell.

Sorrell is talking about a website for Kremp Florist.

Last week, we looked into the site which mentions Burlington a lot, including a map of the Burlington area.  This could be a big deal because Vermont does not allow an out-of-state florist to pretend to be located in Vermont.

After we emailed Kremp to see if it was breaking Vermont law, Kremp responded that it's actually based near Philadelphia and uses local florist to complete its orders.

"We'll will let them know of Vermont's law against these kind of misleading ads, gauge their response, and go from there," says Sorrell.

That could include action to end the so called misleading ad and big fines.

Local florists had pushed for the law because they say deceptive ads drive business out of state and cost customers more money.

Kremp had told us they were sensitive to deception in the flower business and the map was simply there for additional customer service.

"Anybody shopping online should be reading the fine print," says Sorrell.
