Vt Lawmakers Look To Protect Emergency Responders Following NY Deadly Shooting

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont lawmakers want to increase penalties should a first responder be killed on the job.

The move comes after 2 firefighters in upstate New York were ambushed while responding to a house fire on Christmas Eve.

The fire turned out to be a trap and the firefighters were shot to death.

Now, in Vermont, if someone kills a police officer, they face aggravated murder charges.

But that's not the case for other emergency responders.

"We want to take every aspect to make sure that they're doing so safely, not being murdered in the process," said State Rep Brian Savage.

Savage hasn't introduced the bill yet.

He plans to do so in the house judiciary committee.

After the New York shooting, Empire State lawmakers passed a similar bill.
