2013 Vt Legislative Session: The Year Of the Taxes

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

With the slam of a gavel Vermont lawmakers kicked off the 2013.

But some in the room didn't expect this year to become the session of taxes.

It goes on, and on and on," said House Minority Leader Don Turner.

Turner says it seems by the day more new proposals to dip into your wallet are added.

"This is the most taxes I've ever seen," said Turner.

Here are some of the bills legislators are discussing.

A penny-per-ounce of sugar sweetened drinks.

4% gas tax.

10% tax on break-open tickets.

Increasing property taxes by five-cents.

And a heating tax that would add 20-cents per gallon.

Proposals that could force Vermonters to pay hundreds of dollars.

Part of the reason why some lawmakers say we're seeing so many new taxes is the fact that the state faces upwards of a $70-million dollar budget deficit.

Legislators also say they tried to lay off increasing taxes over the past few years because of a bad economy but now they say that may need to change.

"As we come out of the great recession there's really an interest in actually making some investments in the future, which we haven't been able to do for a long time," State Rep. Janet Ancel.

While Ancel doesn't like to see all these proposals, she says if lawmakers do accept new taxes they need to make sure it's a source that won't just plug the hole for next year.

"What's a stable source of revenue and what's fair and what's equitable," said Ancel.

Governor Peter Shumlin has said he won't support any broad based taxes.

But when we reached out to him Tuesday to see how feels about all these increased being floated in the statehouse but he hasn't returned our messages.
