DURHAM, N.C. -

A Vermont man was arrested Tuesday in connection to a Monday night shooting of a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper.

WRAL reports that the suspect shot Trooper Michael L. Potts several times when he got out of his patrol car to do a routine traffic stop on U.S. Highway 70.

While North Carolina Authorities have not identified the suspect, Vermont State Police told WRAL News that the North Carolina Highway Patrol contacted them about 23-year-old Michael Edward Brady.

Police say the trooper remains in stable condition.

WRAL reports that Brady has served time on both state and federal convictions, according to Vermont corrections officials. Brady served 33 months from September 2009 to June 2012 for various charges including burglaries, a home invasion and federal charges on dynamite theft.

Police say they were looking for a man in his 20s with blond hair and a short, military-style haircut.
