2.19.13 How's Winter Going So Far?

Posted: Updated:

Good Tuesday!

We are approaching the 67/33 mark during this middle week of February. That 67/33 is roughly two-thirds done, one-third more of winter to go (according to the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox).

I posted a question to Facebook asking you what you thought of the winter so far. Here's what people said:

Danielson Charles
Good morning Steve, I agree with you, this winter has not been bad at all, We have gotten some decent storms but then it warms up and we lose a lot of the snow cover.......Still and all, I am ready for spring!

Tracy Cunningham Jackson
Bearable is a good word for it. If I could special-order weather, I'd ask for one more big storm (>12") and then a beautiful March warm up! Bring on spring:)

Sam Restino
Wet windy wild winter. Icy moderate bitter cold

Denise Moyer
not a bad winter.. just the wind was not that great..dont mind snow & cold, its refreshing but the wind when it blows right thru ya, is ridiculous!!

Elizabeth Davis
 not enough snow!

Laura-Lee Gross
I agree denise makes it hard for sure. Enjoy your chocolate Steve!!!

Lisa Desjardins
I've seen bigger :) we're in Vermont we should be snowed in two to three times a week. Definitely not like the old fashion snow storms.. Why is that?

Donna Root Morgan
Not a bad winter but ready for spring!

Thank you for your input! If you haven't visited our Facebook page, we're usually asking questions a few times a day from weather-related subjects to news-related stories too.

By the way, I did enjoy my chocolate. Jackie and I read a story on the AM show about the health benefits of chocolate in moderation. Of course those are the key words for me in moderation which I have a hard time holding myself to!

So far the winter in Burlington has been pretty bearable, in my opinion. We work with 'Meteorological Winter' which is December, January, February. During that time in Burlington, this year has been +3.3° compared to average. Last year was +6° to average. So we're still very warm, but not as much as last year.

Snowfall has been much better though! Burlington has had a seasonal total (since July 1, 2012) of 61.1" as of Feb. 18. Average to date is 55.2" and last year was 26.7" to date.

However you may not be able to tell, as strong thaws melted away accumulations quickly after they fell.

So far the mountains are doing much better than last year. For example Jay Peak in far northern VT has received 221" this year, while last year was 251" in grand total. That information can be found here.
Weigh in for yourself! I'd love to hear from you and your thoughts on the winter so far. Remember we can still get cold blasts of air and heavy snows through mid March, so we have a good chunk of potential winter left ahead of us!
