TROY, N.Y. -
The New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) is reminding riders of safety tips while operating snowmobiles.
The NYSSA says they are expecting an increase in snowmobile traffic with the mid-winter break for most school districts throughout the state.
The NYSSA also recommends riders to ride only on marked trails and always stay to the right side.
"Every year our club members throughout the state build and inspect local trails and deem them ready to ride," said Jim Rolf, Trail Coordinator of NYSSA. "Riders must stay on marked trails at all times and respect those landowners who graciously allow trails on their property each winter. Riding off-trail, however attractive it may seem, can cause that trail to be closed by the landowner. Clubs purchase and post signage for safety, but also to respect landowner requirements."
Additional tips for safe snowmobiling:
• Zero alcohol before and during a ride • Respecting landowners' wishes, obeying posted signs and staying on the marked trail • Riding within your ability; operating at a safe and prudent speed at all times • Staying to the right, sharing the trail, and yielding to groomers • Being prepared for changing trail and weather conditions • Obeying NYS law with respect to snowmobiling • Always riding with another snowmobiler
