Vermont Senate's "Death With Dignity" Bill Much Different From Original

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Even though the controversial "death with dignity" bill cleared the senate, lawmakers say it's a much different version than what many wanted.

State senators spent hours debating the bill this week.

It originally called for terminally ill patients with less than six months to live to be prescribed fatal medicine.

But the amended legislation doesn't allow a specific fatal pill to be given.

Instead, it gives protection to doctors if a terminally ill patient willingly takes too much strong medicine on their own.

"I think it does address some of the problems or questions that people have regarding whether they should have the option to hasten their death with medication," said State Sen. John Campbell.

The amended bill is now in the hands of the house, which can accept the changes, or pass its own version.
