VT Lawmakers Looking to Raise Property Taxes to Fund State's Education Budget

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont lawmakers are looking to raise property taxes as a way to fund the state's education budget.

If the bill passes, you'll pay 94 cents per hundred dollars. That number could be higher for you depending on what additional taxes your district charges.

The higher rate will help pay for a 5% increase in school spending in Vermont.

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin says the rate is dependent on Vermonters.

"We decide town by town community by community and I'm a big believer in local control. If Vermonters want to reduce their school spending they need to vote on it. Montpelier doesn't make those decisions those decisions are made locally," Shumlin said.

You can make your voice heard locally at your town meeting on Tuesday March 5.
