U.S. Census Shows More People Leaving Vt. Than Moving In Last Year

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The U.S. Census shows more people leaving the state of Vermont than moving in last year.

That hasn't happened since 1944.

Experts say even though it was a small decline, it's part of a broader trend over several years where the state's population growth rate hovered just above zero.

Here are the population estimates from the U.S. Bureau for Vermont:

Year
Population
2010
625,741
2011
626,592
2012
626,011

The figures also show Vermont and Rhode Island being the only two states in the country to lose population last year.

These changes could pose a challenge to economic development in the state.
