Proposed NY Bill Would Let Children of Illegal Immigrants Receive Financial Aid

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

New York is debating a bill that would allow children of illegal immigrants to qualify for financial aid to attend college.

Many people come to America looking for an opportunity, so some lawmakers don't believe immigrant children should be blamed for their parent's decision.

We asked some SUNY Plattsburgh students to weigh in.

"If they're here, why not? Why shouldn't they have the same opportunity that we have, just because we're born here?" Tyler Fields said.

"We have to think about all the people who do pay their taxes and all of the money that they're going to be contributing to this financial aid as well," Jeri Bacchus said.

Lawmakers heard from immigration advocates at the state house in Albany today.
