"Death With Dignity" Bills Moves Forward in Vermont Senate

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The "death with dignity" bill took a step forward Tuesday.

After a 6 hour debate the senate voted 17 to 13 to move it forward, despite the judiciary committee's recommendation to kill the bill.

If passed, terminally ill patients could be prescribed medicine that would take their lives.

Senate leaders say they were pleased with how the lengthy debate went.

"Very proud of the senate, I think all 30 members, they did a wonderful job. They showed restraint, there was a lot of respect for one another despite the fact that there were different opinions," said State Sen. John Campbell.

That was just the first of three possible votes in the senate.

The second comes Tuesday afternoon.

The bill could be voted out of the senate and moved to the house by the end of the week.
