Red Cross Shelters Southern New Englanders After Storm

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Southern New England got slammed by this weekend's storm.

Those who didn't heed the warnings were stranded, so the Red Cross is encouraging everyone to be prepared.

Have a plan... an emergency kit with blankets, food, flashlights and batteries. Because until the power is restored, many people will be spending another night in a shelter.

"There were close to 1,400 people in Red Cross shelters on Saturday night and 850 remained in those shelters last evening, so those power outages really add a tricky element to a snow storm and blizzard and that's usually when the Red Cross steps in, is when there are power outages, making sure people have a place that's safe dry and warm," Doug Bishop from the Red Cross said.

Often times after massive storms, blood drives get canceled and then there's a low supply. Fortunately, there's not a dire need for blood, but the Red Cross wants to remind you to give regularly.
