COLCHESTER, Vt. -
Vermont's state roads are clear of snow but VTrans job is far from over.
Massachusetts was hit far harder than Vermont by Friday's snow storm so with the roads freshly plowed here Some VTrans crews headed to the Bay State to lend a hand.
"Some of us got a few hours rest in. Some of us didn't," Tammy Ellis, District Transportation Administrator, said.
Ellis is overseeing the VTrans crews in Massachusetts that left Sunday morning headed to Boston and Charleston from Drummers, VT. They were escorted by state police to help them get there.
"When you're dealing with an urban situation it's entirely different," Ellis said.
The 15 trucks and 36 VTrans employees are a gift offered by Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin to Massachusetts Governor Dev al Patrick to help clean up.
"There's just so much more congestion on the streets that we don't deal with on the state highways in Vermont. There's no where to push the snow back," Ellis said.
VTrans crews from every district in the state made the trek down to Massachusetts to help out but the long hours on the road are starting to take their toll.
"Definitely by morning these guys are going to need to have some time off. I mean some solid sleep," Ellis said.
How many morning's they'll wake up in Massachusetts is still anyone's guess.
"I was told to pack a bag for four days so I know that they're looking to have us working all night tonight and some of these guys have had no sleep because our preparations all night to get equipment ready to come down here," Ellis said.
*VTrans office is typically closed on Sundays.
