Red Cross Urging Generator Safety During Friday's Storm

Posted: Updated:

The Red Cross is urging generator safety during Friday's storm.

The Red Cross says that while generators are handy during inclement weather, it's important to protect yourself and your home from dangerous carbon monoxide fumes and generator misuse.

Here are some safety tips when operating a generator:

  • Portable generators should never be used indoors.
  • Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent CO buildup in homes.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions.
  • Install a battery-operated CO alarm in your home.
  • Turn the generator off and let it cool down before refueling.
  • Plug appliances directly into the generator.
  • Never try to power the house by plugging the generator into a wall outlet.
