Concern About Guns in City Buildings

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

South Burlington city councilors wanted to know what could be done to protect them and other people in city buildings from potentially dangerous people with guns.

"The second amendment is not unlimited," says Joe McLean, an attorney for South Burlington.

Now the gun issue became a concern after Police Chief Trevor Whipple says a man recently called Council Chair Rosanne Greco.

"Some of what he said to her on the phone was a little bit unsettling," says Whipple.

Whipple says the man, who he wouldn't name, said he was planning on coming to a council meeting.  The police chief says the man doesn't live in town but Whipple had heard about him.

"There was an instance when he showed up at a location with a firearm. Didn't threaten anyone with the firearm. But he did have it," says Whipple.

And the chief say the man likely could have done that here.  That's because there are no rules that could stop someone from simply walking into city hall or another city building with a gun.

Whipple says someone would have to break a law, including making a threat, to have their gun taken away.

An attorney for South Burlington says it might be difficult for the councilors to ban guns in city buildings because of state laws.

The chief says in his time they haven't had any problems with guns in city buildings, at least that he knows of.

Councilors say they're going to talk to legislators to see what can be done.
