VT Governor Wants To Invest $17 Million In Early Childhood Education

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin wants to invest 17 million dollars into early childhood education.

He made the announcement today at the Trinity Children's Center in Burlington.

In addition to giving kids a strong educational start, Governor Shumlin says his proposal will fix a broken system by helping lower income parents be able to afford quality childcare so they can work.

"Having a system that doesn't penalize mostly single moms who want to get a job and are stuck in a system that punishes them when they get a job and move up the economic ladder, let's fix that together," Gov. Shumlin said.

To give you an example, right now, a family of three spends $850 a month on daycare. But, if the legislature adopts the Governor's proposal, and if that family has an income under the poverty level, the daycare cost would be cut to $350 a month.
