Stay Safe on the Ice

Posted: Updated:
COLCHESTER, Vt. -

With the wacky weather we've been having we wanted to double check what the ice conditions were like across the area.

There's no problem walking or fishing on the thick ice at Mallet's Bay but the bay wasn't Bob Bromley's first choice.

"We wanted to go some place else but it didn't have any ice," Bromley said.

"We just had a day or two of 50 degree weather which probably put a lot of weather on top of the ice," SGT Carl Wedin of Vermont Fish and Wildlife said.

Wedin says that water refroze in the last couple of days but there's still danger out there and on the ice.

"Be aware of pressure cracks, stay away from things sticking out of the ice. I'd recommend not driving on the ice," Wedin said.

Cars aren't good to take on the ice but he says ATV's should be safe.

Fish and Wildlife is also on the ice checking to make sure people have their proper permits. Fishers and ATV riders are taking the safety precautions too.

"Usually you wait til it gets to be below zero a few good nights," ATV rider Scott Taylor said.

"Check the ice and if it isn't think enough go home," Bromley said.

But if you're going out on the ice make sure you have the essentials.

"A set of ice picks with you, a cell phone, go out on the ice with a friend and try not to go alone," Wedin said.
