Controversial "Death with Dignity" Bill Moves Forward

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The controversial physician assisted suicide bill easily got the approval from a Vermont committee Friday.

Health and welfare members voted five-nothing in favor Friday morning.

The bill now moves on to the senate judiciary committee, where it is expected to fail.

But if it passes, terminally ill patients, given less than six-months to live, would be allowed to take medicine to take their lives.

Legislators agreed earlier this year to take it up on the senate floor no matter what.

"Looking at past of 10 years of trying to have this discussion, looking at the will of the majority of the senate, we made a decision that we would do it this way," said State Senator Claire Ayer.

Judiciary committee members are expected to vote next week, before it heads to the senate floor the following week.
