MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont has been awarded a $1 million grant for broadband expansion in the state.

According to a press release, the funding will support projects designed to bring service to homes and businesses where no broadband is currently offered and at locations where cell service is the only access to the Internet.

"The scope of this latest grant round represents how far we've come in just the past year," Christopher Campbell, Vermont Telecommunication Authority (VTA) Executive Director, said. "Many new projects are in progress to expand broadband access to homes and businesses across the state as we continue to find solutions for hard-to-reach locations."

The minimum service speed required in the proposals for Internet connections is a combined upload and download speed of at least 5 megabits per second.
