Sen. Bernie Sanders Fighting to Protect Social Security

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is fighting to protect what he says is the government's most successful program, Social Security.

Representative Paul Ryan, the new chairman of the House Budget Committee, wants to see some changes to that program.

Ryan wants to partially privatize Social Security, lower its cost-of-living adjustments, and drastically cut benefits.

A deficit reduction commission, established by President Barack Obama, calls for some changes and adjustments to Social Security.

"Despite the enormous success of Social Security, despite the fact that Social Security can pay out every benefit for the next 21 years, my Republican colleagues and some Democrats are attempting to use the deficit crisis to cut Social Security benefits, that is wrong," Sanders said.

Sanders formed the Defend Social Security caucus to continue to continue the fight for those benefits.

New York Senator Charles Schumer also jumped on board.
