Annual Filing of Homestead Declarations Required in Vermont Again

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Annual filing of homestead declarations are required again in Vermont.

A press release says all eligible property owners must file homestead declarations by April 15, the due date for filing Vermont income tax returns.

"Filing your homestead declaration is critical to paying the correct amount of tax," said Mary Peterson, commissioner of taxes. "Therefore, the Department of Taxes is making every effort to inform property owners about the change in the law."

Prior to the changes, owners only had to declare their homestead once there was a change in ownership or status in the property. The press release says in Vermont, all property is subject to education property tax.

Homeowners must file a homestead declaration if the owner owns and occupies the property as his or her primary residence and is domiciled in Vermont.

Owners of homestead property acquired as of April 1 must file by the April 15 deadline. Late filings are accepted, but homeowners will have to pay a penalty.
