Vermont Leaders Work On Plan To Tax Break Open Tickets

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

We're beginning to learn more about how Vermont lawmakers would collect millions of dollars if break open tickets are taxed.

The Vermont commissioner of liquor control talked about gambling tickets found mainly in bars with legislators Wednesday.

He says the state's proposal would create a system that ensures non-profit groups pay the 10% tax before any of them are played in bars.

"We would be licensing the manufacturers, the distributors and I would think we would have a better handle on the amount of tickets that are being sold across the state. Right now, nobody really knows," said Vermont Liquor Control Commissioner Michael Hogan.

If passed, leaders hope to start regulating the tickets by this summer.

Leaders think the state will take in an extra $17-million dollars a year from the 10% tax.
