Vt. Lawmakers Working to Tighten Laws About Equal Pay For Equal Work

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont lawmakers are working to tighten laws about equal pay for equal work.

Advocates for new legislation include Attorney General Bill Sorrell.

He says state contractors must allow inspection to ensure there is no discrimination against women who work in the same jobs as men.

The new bill would give all employees the right to ask for flexible workplace arrangements to help balance their family life.

"The legislation makes very clear that there may be no retaliation against any employee who makes such an inquiry," Sorrell said.

The bill also calls for the study of paid family leave funded by employee payroll deductions.

Two states already have systems in place.
